WHAT IS A LACTATION CONSULTANT?

An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is the only internationally certified health care professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding. She is knowledgeable, skilled, and experienced in this field and her primary focus is to provide education, assistance and support to breastfeeding women. IBCLCs are essential members of the maternal-child health team who protect, promote and support breastfeeding to benefit the health and well-being of women, children and families worldwide.

IBCLCs adhere to standards of practice and a code of ethics, and work
within a defined scope of practice. Maintenance of IBCLC certification requires continued education in human lactation, breastfeeding, and professional ethics.

Mothers who experience problems in the first few days or weeks of breastfeeding need accurate information and support to help them continue breastfeeding. An IBCLC can provide this support and information and is able to help with a large number of breastfeeding circumstances. IBCLCs work together with mothers to prevent and solve breastfeeding problems, collaborate with other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive care that supports, protects and promotes breastfeeding. They also encourage a social environment that supports breastfeeding families and educate families, health professionals and policy makers about the far-reaching and long-lasting value of breastfeeding as a global public health imperative.
